What should I eat for clear skin?

Isn't that the million dollar question. The truth, it’s probably not what you think and it’s also different for each of us.

I've been there. Cutting out anything and everything that might cause a breakout. Stressing about your food choices so much that nothing is enjoyable. There was one point where I was sugar-free, dairy-free, gluten-free, egg-free, and fun-free. I had gotten to the point where I would decline dinner out with friends because I knew I wouldn't be able to eat out at a restaurant. I felt frustrated with food and afraid that everything would cause my skin to breakout.

It's easy to get caught up in restricting and limiting food choices in the pursuit of clearing the skin. But here's the thing, too much stress around food choices and creating an "unhealthy" relationship around food is going to be way worse then letting some flexibility into your diet. The piece of pizza is not going to drastically impact your skin, but the way you feel about food and yourself WILL!

BALANCE. Think of 70:30 rule, even 70:30. If majority of your food choices are real whole foods that are going to nourish your body and skin, then you are on the right track. And let me be clear, I'm talking guilt-free food freedom. No calorie-counting, no food restriction, or punishing yourself with exercise the next day for indulging. This stress will only contribute to your breakouts.

FLIP THE SCRIPT. Instead of taking things out of ours diets by going gluten-free, dairy-free, or sugar-free. Lets focus on all the amazing nutrient dense foods that we can ADD to your diet. Try being less restrictive and switching our mindsets from “what foods we can't eat” to “what foods will nourish and heal my skin from the inside out”. Looking to clear acne for good? NUTRITION is the foundation to long term clear skin and happy hormones. Nourishing the body with foods that make it feel good is where we usually see the most improvement in breakouts. However, clearing your skin does not mean you need to have a “perfect” nutrition plan and give up everything you love to eat. Your relationship with food is far more important than what you eat. Eating a healthy BALANCE meaning 80% skin nourishing and 20% loving your life and indulgence can give you the clear skin you want. Head here to learn more about my favourite Acne Superfoods.

Bottom line; food is nourishment and we should look forward to the foods we are eating on a daily basis. Letting go of the stress around food and tapping into what makes you feel good, will make your skin glow from the inside out. If you’re wondering what you should eat for clear skin, working with an acne nutritionist is a great way to find a custom plan that works for you.

This is also why I love incorporating a SMART SKINCARE routine into my programs. A functional skincare routine with the right products supports you and your perfectly “imperfect” life. This means having that piece of pizza, drinking that glass wine, and one late night will not cause breakouts, because your skincare routine is going to step in and keep things balanced and calm. Big love,

Caralyn
